Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure administered by a healthcare provider that injects Asclera (polidocanol) into the affected veins where uncomplicated spider veins and reticular veins are present in your legs. Asclera works by damaging the inner wall of the vein and eventually causing the vein to collapse on itself. Over time, the damaged vein is replaced with tissue.
Please read and follow the few points listed below in preparation for sclerotherapy. In doing so, you will be contributing to the ease and success of the procedure.
Do not shave or use moisturizers on your legs for 24 hours prior to your sclerotherapy session.
Do not take aspirin, aspirin-containing products or ibuprofen for 10 days before your session. Such medications increase the potential for bleeding and bruising.
Avoid prolonged sun exposure for the 10 days prior to your scheduled sclerotherapy.
Wear or bring shorts to wear for the procedure.
You will need prescription strength support hose for the day after the procedure. If you do not have a good pair of support hose, you may purchase them at any medical supply company. You will need a fitting of a 15mm Hg support hose. Please bring your support hose with you the day of your procedure.
Dressing (elastic bandages, tape, and cotton balls) may be removed 24 hours after treatment.
Walk 15 to 20 minutes immediately after the procedure and then daily for the next few days.
Wear high-quality support hose, 10mm Hg continuously for 2-3 days then for 3-4 weeks during day time only.
For 2 to 3 days following treatment avoid prolonged standing, heavy exercise, sunbathing, long airplane rides, hot baths or saunas.
Try to elevate your legs as much as possible during the first week after the treatment, especially when sitting.
If a substantial number of veins persist, schedule a repeat injection session any time after six weeks.
